Waylon Jennings (AKA the Hoss) was born in Littlefield, Texas, on June 15, 1937, and died on June 17, 1986. Waylon was in a band and working as a radio DJ by the age of twelve. His sound evolved over time, becoming tougher and more bass-driven. Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash was one of his friends, and he formed the Highwaymen with Willie, Johnny and Kris Kristofferson. For defying the country music establishment, he and some of his peers were dubbed “The Outlaws.”
“Stop the World (And Let Me Off”) was Jennings’ first country hit. His musical style did evolve over time, becoming tougher and more bass-driven. Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson were among the songwriters and artists with whom he collaborated on songs. When “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way” hit the pop charts in 1975, it was Jennings’ first taste of crossover success. Jennings was also the narrator for the country comedy The Dukes of Hazzard, in addition to writing the theme song for the show.
