Def Leppard were formed in Sheffield, England, UK in 1977. They have had the same lineup since 1992 which is; Joe Elliot (lead vocals), Rick Savage (bass, backing vocals), Phil Collen (guitar, backing vocals), Rick Allen (drums, backing vocals), and Vivien Campbell (guitar, backing vocals). 

They became a leading part of the new wave of the British heavy metal movement during the early 1980s. The band had their greatest success commercially during the early 80s to the early 90s and the most popular track from their 2nd album “High ‘n’ Dry”, “Bringin’ On the Heartbreak” was one of the first rock videos ever played on MTV in 1992. Several of their albums have topped the charts in many countries and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.

11. X (2002)

“X” (pronounced 10) was the band’s 8th studio album which was released on July 30th 2002. This album saw the band venture into the pop genre. The album reached number 11 on the Billboard 200 in the US and number 14 on the UK album chart. This was the 1st Def Leppard album that Rick Allen (drums) took part in any song writing, he co-wrote 11 tracks on this album.

Although the “X” in the title signifies 10 and this was their 8th studio album, between “Euphoria” and this they released 2 albums, one of B-sides and the other a greatest hits album. They released 3 singles from this album which were; “Now”, “Four Letter Word” and “Long, Long Way To Go”.

10. Slang (1996)

This was the band’s 6th studio album which was released on May 14th 1996. It was the 1st album to feature Viven Campbell (guitar) and charted at number 5 on the UK album chart and number 14 on the Billboard 200 chart. It is also the only Def Leppard album to not feature their font logo on the album cover.

They released 4 singles from this album which were; “Slang”, “Breathe a Sigh” and 2 that were only released in the US which were; “Work It Out” and “All I Want Is Everything”.

9. Euphoria (1999)

Released on June 8th 1999 in the US and 6 days later in the UK, this was their 7th studio album. It got to number 11 on the UK chart and includes the single “Promises” which got to the number 1 position in the US. Other singles released from this album were; “Paper Sun”, “Goodbye” and “Day After Day”. 

This album saw the band return to their original style of music with some added extras. Formula One racing champion driver Damon Hill, who was Rick Savage’s neighbour, added a guitar solo on the track “Demolition Man”.

8. Diamond Star Halos (2022)

This was their 12th studio album which was released on May 27th 2022. It was their 1st studio album for almost 7 years since “Def Leppard” in 2015. The title of this album comes from the 1971 T. Rex single “Get It On”. 

There were 3 singles released from this album which were; “Kick”, “Take What You Want” and “Fire It Up”. Other tracks include 2 featuring Alison Krauss which are; “Lifeless” and “This Guitar”.

7. Songs From The Sparkle Lounge (2008)

Released on April 25th 2008 in Europe and 4 days later in the US, this was the band’s 10th studio album. It reached number 10 in the UK and number 5 on the Billboard 200 chart in the US whilst topping the Top Hard Rock Albums and the Top Rock Albums charts in the US.

There were 2 singles released from this album which were; “Nine Lives” and “C’mon C’mon”. “Nine Lives” features country singer Tim McGraw and the band performed “Love” with Taylor Swift for their 2008 CMT Crossroads episode “Taylor Swift and Def Leppard”.

6. Def Leppard (2015)

This was their 11th studio album which was released on October 30th 2015. It was their 1st studio album since “Songs From The Sparkle Lounge” (2008) and their 1st on earMUSIC Records. It was the band’s 7th top 10 album on the Billboard 200 chart after it debuted at number 10.

There were 4 singles released from this album which were; “Let’s Go”, “Dangerous”, “Man Enough” and “We Belong”. “Let’s Go” was released around 6 weeks before the album was released. 

5. Adrenalize (1992)

Released on March 31st 1992, this was the band’s 5th studio album and the 1st since the death of Steve Clark in 1991. Instead of replacing Steve Clark, the band recorded the album as a 4 piece band. The album debuted at number 1 on the UK and US album charts and stayed at number 1 on the Billboard 200 for 5 weeks and remained on the chart for 65 weeks.

There were 6 singles released from this album which were; “Let’s Get Rocked”, “Make Love Like a Man”, “Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad”, “Stand Up (Kick Love into Motion)”, “Heaven Is” and “Tonight”.

4. On Through The Night (1980)

This was the band’s debut album which was released on March 14th 1980. It reached number 15 on the UK album chart and number 51 on the Billboard 200 chart. It contains re-recorded versions of “Rocks Off” and “Overture” which were originally released on their independent EP “The Def Leppard E.P”. 

There were 3 singles released from this album which were; “Wasted” and “Hello America” which were both released in the UK and “Rock Brigade” which was released in the US. The track “When The Walls Come Tumbling Down” has a spoken word intro that was performed by Dave Cousins from “The Strawbs”.

3. Pyromania (1983)

Released on January 20th 1983, this was the band’s 3rd studio album. It was the 1st album to feature Phil Collen who replaced Pete Willis on guitar. This album marked a change in direction for the band, moving away from their heavy metal roots, to a more radio friendly sound. It worked as the album charted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart, number 4 on the Canadian album chart and number 18 on the UK album chart.

There were 4 singles released from this album which were; “Photograph”, “Rock of Ages”, “Foolin’” and “Too Late For Love”. This album along with its follow up, “Hysteria” are considered to be among the best Def Leppard albums ever produced.

This is the 2nd studio album released by Def Leppard on July 6th 1981. It reached number 38 on the Billboard 200 chart in the US and number 26 on the UK album chart. There were 2 singles released from this album which were; “Let It Go” and “Bringin’ On The Heartbreak”.

1. Hysteria (1987)

Released on August 3rd 1987 this was Def Leppard’s 4th studio album. This was their last album to feature Steve Clark before his death in 1991.It is their best selling album to date with more than 20 million copies sold worldwide. The album charted at number 1 on both sides of the Atlantic and spent 96 weeks in the US top 40.

The album title was thought up by drummer Rick Allen, and refers to his car crash, his arm amputation and the media coverage worldwide that followed it. They released 7 singles from this album which were; “Animal”, “Women”, “Pour Some Sugar On Me”, “Hysteria”, “Armageddon It”, “Love Bites” and “Rocket”.
