Minor Guitar Chords (how to play them all)

A minor chord is a type of chord that has a sad or melancholic sound to it. It is made up of three notes – the root note, the minor third, and the fifth. When you look at chord charts, you’ll notice minor chords are denoted by the letter ‘m’ after the chord name.

That matters when you get more into learning about music, but for now you just need to learn how to play them.

And so in this article, we’re going to show you how to play each of them.

How To Play The A Minor Chord

Am chord
  1. Index finger: 1st fret, 2nd string
    Place your index finger on the 1st fret of the 2nd string
  2. Middle finger: 2nd fret, 4th string
    Place your middle finger on the 2nd fret of the 4th string
  3. Ring finger: 2nd fret, 3rd string
    Place your ring finger on the 2nd fret of the 3rd string
  4. Play chord
    Strum all strings, except the 6th string

How To Play The B Minor Chord

Bm chord
  1. Index finger: barre the 2nd fret
    Use your index finger to barre the 2nd fret (don’t worry about the 6th string, we won’t need to play that one).
  2. Middle finger: 3rd fret, 2nd string
    Place your middle finger on the 3rd fret of the 2nd string.
  3. Ring finger: 4th fret, 4th string
    Place your ring finger on the 4th fret of the 4th string.
  4. Pinky finger: 4th fret, 3rd string
    Place your pinky finger on the 4th fret of the 3rd string.
  5. Play chord
    Strum all strings, except the 6th string.

How To Play The C Minor Chord

Cm chord
  1. Index finger: barre the 3rd fret
    Use your index finger to barre the 3rd fret (don’t worry about the 6th string, we won’t need to play that one).
  2. Middle finger: 4th fret, 2nd string
    Place your middle finger on the 4th fret of the 2nd string.
  3. Ring finger: 5th fret, 4th string
    Place your ring finger on the 5th fret of the 4th string.
  4. Pinky finger: 5th fret, 3rd string
