Slipknot Albums Ranked (rated from worst to best)

Slipknot were formed from the busy heavy metal music scene in Des Moines, Iowa, USA in 1993. They went under various names and lineups before eventually settling on the name “Meld”. They used to perform a track called “Slipknot” and eventually decided to name the band after the song, that was in 1995.

Later that same year they began recording their own material and as they weren’t signed nor had a recording contract, they had to fund it themselves. The end result was their first album, “Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat” which was released on October 31st 1996.

Best Slipknot Albums Of All Time

It’s hard to believe that from 1996 up until now, Slipknot has only released 7 studio albums, but here they are in what we believe are from best to worst. If you disagree with our rankings, let us know how you would order them and why in the comments.

7. Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. (1996)

It seems unfair to include an album that was made before Corey Taylor, Jim Root or Sid Wilson were in the band. But it does give an insight into how the band started, a few tracks made it onto their official “debut” album, which were “Tattered And Torn” and “Only One”. The rest wasn’t that brilliant in all honesty.

6. All Hope Is Gone (2008)

This was the final album from the original lineup before Paul Gray (bassist) had died and Joey Jordison (drummer) was told to leave. But listening to this album, it’s fairly clear there were problems within the band. The only good track to come from this album was “Psychosocial” and that doesn’t hold a candle to some of their earlier tracks.

5. .5: The Gray Chapter (2014)

This album was dedicated to the late Paul Gray, Slipknot’s bassist who had recently passed away. Which explains some of the darker material included on the album which is to be expected. There are some great tracks here, like “The Devil In I” and “Custer” but the hour long, 14 track album does seem to be padded out and not as good as it would have been with some better editing.

4. Slipknot (1999)

This was their official debut album and it was a corker. It took the metal world by storm with tracks like “Surfacing”, “Wait and Bleed” and “Eyeless”. Those tracks are still relevant today even though the album only barely entered the charts.

3. Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses (2004)

This album saw Slipknot going in a new direction, in fact you could say this album is reminiscent of Led Zeppelin IV in many ways, only heavier. With great tracks like “Pulse of the Maggots”, “Opium for the People”, “The Blister Exists” and “The Nameless” to name a few.

2. We Are Not Your Kind (2019)

This album marks a return of Slipknot from the tortuous past to a clearer future. With the introduction of a more sythesised sound and choral work too! We look forward to whatever they can come up with next.

1. Iowa (2001)

This was the album that established Slipknot as a fully fledged metal band in the eyes of the fans. It reached number 2 on the Billboard 200 and introduced a whole new era in the world of metal. With tracks like “Disasterpiece”, “People=S**t” and “My Plague” ”Iowa” has everything you’d ever need to show a stranger what Slipknot were all about.
